The
young Henri, influenced by a family
environment where his father and uncles
painted, showed signs, very early
on, of a skilful ability to wield
the pencil.
René Princeteau (1843-1914),
a deaf and dumb animal painter, and
family friend, gave him some advice.
However, showing more prowess than
his master, Lautrec soon proved his
great virtuosity: Artilleryman
saddling his horse (1879) inspired
by the military maneuvers taking place
near Bosc, the family castle in the
Aveyron region, shows surprising mastery.
On a barely defined landscape, Lautrec
renders the horse's agitation using
large, spirited brush strokes. |
