Between
1890 and 1900, the illustrated poster
and lithograph had reached the height
of their fame. The artistic poster had
taken over the streets, and Lautrec,
the painter of around 30 such posters,
fully took part in the movement.
In 1891, Zidler, director of the Moulin-Rouge
ball which opened in 1889, commissioned
his first poster from him. Lautrec designed
a work, the originality of which was
based on the layout of the page. In
the foreground, the figure of the boneless
Valentin stands out, while la Goulue,
slightly off-center, stands out from
the crowd of spectators, profiled in
shadow figures, in the background. This
poster surprised the artist's contemporaries
by the simplicity of its composition
and the brightness of its stark tones,
immediately conferring its author with
real notoriety.
