La Lautrec's first poster, which made his name known to the general public, had been commissioned from the painter in 1891 by Zidler, director of the Moulin Rouge for the launch of the season.

Cut off at the waist, in grey shadow, "Valentin the Boneless" occupies the foreground. The famous "Goulue", the poster's focal point, moves along the diagonals of the floor which create the depth of the scene.
