The modern art collection,
an overview of contemporary creation

During the 30s, a modern art collection aimed at situating the artist within the art of his time and evoking contemporary creation was established to complement the Lautrec collection.

Thanks to purchases, donations from friends of Toulouse-Lautrec or state deposits, the artistic movements that the painter was associated with are evoked: cloisonnism ( Louis Anquetin ), synthetism ( Gauguin, Emile Bernard ), the Nabis ( Maurice Denis, Bonnard, Vuillard, Vallotton ) or contemporaries close to his theme ( Edgar Degas, Forain, Steinlein ).

Fauvism and Expressionism are evoked by paintings of Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), d'Albert Marquet (1875-1947), d'Henri Matisse (1869-1954). A significant group of artists "witnesses of their time" who enjoyed recognition in artistic circles, such as the so-called "poetic reality" painters (Roger Limoux, Maurice Brianchon, Roland Oudot…) is gathered.

Paintings and sculptures from the interwar period finally reveal the more traditional currents of the School of Paris.
